This Christmas for many has been dominated by technology. Christmas makes a great time of year for buying new gadgets and upgrading the family computer. It is also a time when the family traditionally gets together, how has technology fit into the traditional Christmas.
Over this Christmas I noticed the pervasiveness of technology into our lives not just with myself, a technology enthusiast, but with people who just use the technology for its function. In the living room on Christmas day with my family the TV was on while I was watching something else on my laptop. My sister was also using her laptop during Christmas to organise the songs for her new iPod. My mother took pictures using her digital camera which also allowed the sharing of photos there and then. The whole experience for me was intriguing.
Last Christmas if I had used my laptop while the family was gathered at the TV during Christmas I would have been considered rude. This Christmas me using the laptop wasn't noticed as out of the ordinary. Technology really has crept up and taken hold. It is encouraging to see that ordinary people are beginning to use technology in new ways and use it in new situations. The more people that utilise technology the better technology will progress. Technology this Christmas has helped to bring people together and has enhanced and added to the Christmas tradition. Technology doesn't have to dehumanise use at all.
This Christmas really was a digital Christmas and this makes the future for technology all the more exciting.
